Sesame seeds have a lovely, rich, nutty flavour. They are considered one of the oldest condiments, apparently dating back to 1600B.C. Very rich in oil, from which sesame oil is extracted, these seeds are very linked to Asian cuisine where they represent one of the key ingredients. Any Asian pantry would absolutely include sesame seeds and oil. Around the world they are used extensively in baking, appearing on top of burger buns and breadsticks and many breads, as well as confectionary. Halva, a Middle Eastern sweet is made from sesame seed paste just like tahini which is essential to making hummous.
